     From the Erzgebirge region of Germany, known for 
the production of nutcrackers and smokers, come these 
miniature turned wooden ornaments. Many have been 
produced by such well known firms like Ulbricht and 
Steinbach but some have been carefully crafted by 
much smaller home cottage businesses in the Ore

Owing to the mining process of the Erzgebirge region of 
Germany, miners have stayed as the focus in the production 
of wood turned figures until this present day.

With the advent of Stearin candles coming around 1850, the 
miner grew in importance as a light-bearing figure.  To the 
miner, burning light was not just a necessary prerequisite 
to work in the dark, it's warm shine meant a symbol of life.
